Overall performance, fuel economy and engine longevity – all items that are partially dependent on the condition of your vehicles air filtration system. The air filters main job is simple; prohibit aerial contaminates (dust, debris, road sediment) from entering your vehicles engine and causing damage. Made up of elements like cotton, paper or gauze, these materials are charged with filtering out close 98% of foreign material that may do your engine harm.

Air filters come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the not only output level of your vehicles power plant, but its configuration as well. Diesel engines for example may utilize large conical shaped or flat filters, as they require large amounts of air. Small displacement engines on the other hand can get by with smaller filters due to smaller combustion chambers. Regardless though, one thing will always remains constant. The healthier the air that flows into your engine, the better that engine will run.

How does one know when it’s time to change the air filter and what does one look for?
1. Poor Idling: When a vehicle is stationary one may encounter inconsistent running patterns, which could be compared to a person trying to catch their breath. This will result in a fluctuation in engine RPMs and lack luster performance.

2. Fuel Consumption: Most people are fairly cognizant of their fuel economy. However if a decrease is noticed the problem may be as simple as a clogged filter as this is a common cause of decreased MPGs.

3. Lack of Performance: Believe it or not, but fresh air is a key component to having a vehicle perform correctly. A lack of clean air into an engine can lead to an insufficient combustion process, which may lead to a loss in both power and acceleration.

4. Turbo Damage: If a vehicle is equipped with a turbocharger, keeping your air filter clean is essential. A dirty filter not only causes increased RPMs within the turbo, but also may allow for dust and debris to enter the system. The result of which could severely damaged the turbo unit, or worse, internal engine parts.

The air filter system on most engines is quite simple, as is the replacement process. This is a 10-minute job at best and can be done by just about anyone. Hand tools are generally not required and all parts can be purchased at your local dealership or through their web site.

* Important Tip: Due to the powerful suction a diesel engine produces, it is imperative that your engine is turned off before a filter check or replacement so as to not suck any foreign contaminants into the engine. Step 1: Identify the air box that is located underneath the hood
Step 1: Undo the clips that seal the cold air box lid closed

Step 2: Inspect the filter for debris and contaminants and replace if dirty

Step 3: Take note of old filter orientation before removal

Step 4: Remove dirty filter and discard

Step 5: Insert new filter and reseal air box with retainer clips

And there you go. Your vehicle is now back on the road to achieving better performance, idling and overall fuel economy!
